On February 27th we held our first lunchtime event in conjunction with the Institute of Directors at the Tauranga Club. The presentation ‘Business – The Changing Landscape” delivered by Nicki McClintock, ASB Manager of Coaching and Development, had us reflecting on the importance of emotional and relationship skills as we move towards the fourth industrial revolution. The previous three industrial revolutions being steam and water power, electricity and assembly lines and computerization.
Nicki shared a quote from Pablo Isla, (Harvard Business Review’s best performing CEO in 2018). He said that in terms of his leadership style he was “learning to be less rational and more emotional”.
He went on to say that “Motivating people and generating a sense of spirit inside a company are essential parts of the CEO’s role. We need to appeal to our employees’ emotions to help create an environment where they can innovate.”
Nicki then spoke about the science of behaviour in order for us to understand how we can better appeal to employees’ and client’s emotions as leaders looking for permanent and positive behavior change and improved results. She emphasised that relationships, responsiveness and proactivity are key factors that potential clients often considered more important than price, when selecting a product or service.
It was a thought provoking session that made us look at what we could change in our own roles and companies to become better prepared to face the challenges the future will bring.
