On April 10th we were treated to a fabulous Business Behind the Scenes at Mackenzie Elvin. There was a wonderful atmosphere inside the 1880’s homestead villa and it was also great to visit their new mediation centre, in their adjoining building.
In the 1970’s Fiona Mackenzie was one of just a few women completing her law degree in Otago, and on graduation she and her husband Graeme returned to Tauranga. In 1980 while juggling motherhood with her legal career, Fiona established her firm in the family homestead at the current location in Brown Street.
When the practice outgrew the family home she moved to offices in town, but relocated back to the villa when her family decided to move out to a property in Bethlehem.
Graeme joined her as a partner in practice in the mid 1990’s, followed soon after by Marcus Wilkins. In 2018 Tom, their son, also become a partner in the firm.
Today Fiona is one of the leading family law specialists in New Zealand and has more recently completed doctoral studies resulting in a PhD from the University of Otago.
She has a passion for continuing professional excellence while maintaining a human heart.
We also heard from Rebecca Savage who is an Associate at Mackenzie Elvin Law specialising in family dispute resolution work; Tinka Bowyer who joined Mackenzie Elvin as a senior solicitor last year specialising in property and commercial work and Kathy Poultney who is a solicitor specialising in family law. It was not until Kathy was in her late 30’s that she was able to begin studying full time and realise her dream of becoming a lawyer.
All the speakers spoke of the family friendly ethos of the firm and its desire to help employees, local families and businesses succeed.
